Arp 230: Two Spirals in One?

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Is this one galaxy or two? Analysis of Arp 230 suggests that this seemingly single spiral galaxy is actually the result of a recent collision between two spiral galaxies. The slow-motion collision unfolded over about 100 million years, triggering a burst of star formation that is now subsiding. This event shares many similarities with the colliding galaxy sequence depicted in the IMAX movie "Cosmic Voyage."
