This Mars Global Surveyor image shows a region south of Schiaparelli crater on Mars. Dark lines crisscross light-colored depressions. One possibility is that the feature near the center is a dried-up lake bed, with mineral deposits and cracks from evaporation. This may indicate past water on Mars.
