Earth's Richat Structure

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Richat Structure, nearly 50 kilometers across, is easily seen from space in the Sahara Desert of Mauritania. Once thought to be an impact crater, its flat middle and lack of shock-altered rock suggest a different origin. Scientists now believe it formed from the erosion of layered sedimentary rock, not a volcanic eruption.
