COSMIC MESSAGE
Last Thursday, the NEAR spacecraft flew past Earth, reflecting sunlight from its solar panels. This flyby used Earth's gravity to deflect NEAR onto a trajectory to the asteroid 433 Eros. NEAR, launched in 1996, had already visited asteroid 253 Mathilde.
