When Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 struck Jupiter in 1994, its fragments plunged into the gas giant's atmosphere. This time-lapse sequence shows the dark marks left by two impacts. Jupiter's gaseous nature meant no permanent craters formed, but the impacts created large, temporary scars that gradually faded.
