In 1994, Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 slammed into Jupiter. This image shows the impact site of fragment G, a dark smudge larger than Earth. Jupiter, a gas giant, absorbed the impact without a solid surface, leaving these temporary scars on its atmosphere.
