A Leonid Meteor Explodes

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image captures a Leonid meteor as it explodes in Earth's upper atmosphere. Traveling at 70 kilometers per second, the collision with atmospheric gases generates immense heat, causing the sand-sized fragment to glow brightly and disintegrate. Sometimes, as seen here, the meteor literally explodes, leaving behind a visible cloud that slowly dissipates.
