The regions above sunspots are surprisingly hot, hundreds of times hotter than the sunspots themselves. Sunspots are cooler because their magnetic fields reduce convective heating. To understand this, NASA's NuSTAR satellite, an X-ray telescope, observed the Sun. This image shows the X-ray emissions from these hot regions.
