ESO202-G23 is a colorful mess, a collision between two galaxies taking place over hundreds of millions of years. The visible colors give astronomers clues about what is happening. This jumble includes an active nucleus spewing ultraviolet radiation that lights up surrounding gas, galactic arms contorted by gravity, a star-forming complex, and dust. In billions of years, this mess might settle into a relatively normal galaxy.
