This swirling form is not a distant nebula, but a spiral eddy in the North Atlantic. It formed near the Gulf Stream off the East Coast of the U.S. Astronauts on the Challenger space shuttle captured this image during the STS 41G mission. These ocean current phenomena can be tens of miles across.
