NGC 1818: A Young Globular Cluster

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Globular clusters once dominated the Milky Way. When our galaxy first formed, there may have been thousands of them. Today, only about 200 remain. Many were destroyed by encounters with each other or the Galactic center. Surviving relics are older than any Earth fossil and older than any other structures in our Galaxy.
