M46 And NGC 2438: Young And Old
NASA APOD · Wil Milan
COSMIC MESSAGE
M46 is a young open star cluster, about 300 million years old, still containing hundreds of stars. Located 5,000 light-years away in the constellation Puppis, it is a familiar sight to stargazers. Intriguingly, it appears to contain an ancient planetary nebula, NGC 2438, which is much older than the cluster itself.
