Hydrogen, Helium, and the Stars of M10

NASA APOD · Till Credner, Sven Kohle (Bonn University), Hoher List Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE

The bright reddish-orange stars in this image of the globular cluster M10 are red giants. These are stars that have exhausted the hydrogen fuel in their cores and are now burning hydrogen in a shell around the core, causing them to expand. Stars like our Sun will eventually reach this phase of stellar evolution.
