About 8,000 years ago, a star in our galaxy exploded, creating supernova remnant IC 443. This infrared image shows the expanding gas shell, with blue indicating emission from excited iron atoms. Red wisps show where the expanding gas impacts a molecular cloud. This interaction excites molecules, causing them to glow.
