A String Of Pearls

Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 famously collided with Jupiter in 1994. Before its impact, Jupiter's strong gravity tore the comet into multiple fragments, creating a 'string of pearls' appearance. This composite image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows these fragments. The collision provided scientists with a unique opportunity to study both cometary impacts and Jupiter's atmosphere.
