Leo I is a dwarf spheroidal galaxy, one of the smaller satellite galaxies orbiting our Milky Way. It's thought to be the most distant of our known satellites, about 250,000 parsecs away. Unlike larger galaxies, Leo I has very little gas for forming new stars.
