Phi Persei is a binary star system, 720 light-years away. The larger star is a rapidly rotating massive star, surrounded by a disk of gas. Its smaller companion orbits 100 million miles away. Currently, the larger star is about nine times more massive, but ten million years ago, the smaller companion was the system's dominant star.
