The Decade that Defined Star System

NASA APOD · Lynette Cook
COSMIC MESSAGE

At the start of the 1990s, our Solar System was the only known planetary system. The first exoplanetary system was discovered in 1991, orbiting a pulsar, detected by subtle changes in pulse arrival times. By mid-decade, Jupiter-like planets around Sun-like stars were found by detecting a slight wobble in their stars' motion. The image shows an artist's sketch of a planet discovered orbiting HD 209458.
