As the twentieth century began, the nature of the Milky Way was a subject of intense debate. Observations in the 1920s revealed spiral nebulae containing variable stars, placing them far beyond our galaxy. This confirmed the Milky Way is itself a spiral galaxy, viewed from within. Interstellar dust was later identified as the material obscuring our view of distant spiral arms.
