Julius Caesar and Leap Days

NASA APOD · Rune Rysstad
COSMIC MESSAGE

Julius Caesar introduced a calendar system in 46 BC that included a leap day every four years. This was based on advice from astronomer Sosigenes of Alexandria. The purpose was to account for the Earth's orbital period being slightly longer than 365 rotations, ensuring the calendar remained aligned with the seasons. Today is one of those extra days.
