The Large Magellanic Cloud is the brightest galaxy visible from the Southern Hemisphere and the second closest to the Milky Way. It is an irregular galaxy, containing older red stars and younger blue stars. The bright red region near the top of the image is the Tarantula Nebula, a large star-forming area. The LMC is one of eleven dwarf galaxies orbiting our Milky Way.
