The Compton Gamma Ray Observatory was deployed into low Earth orbit nine years ago. This image, taken from the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1991, shows Compton's release, with interior reflections and Earth's limb visible. Compton's instruments could detect gamma rays, photons with energies 100,000 times greater than visible light, allowing it to explore the most energetic phenomena in the universe.
