Gamma-rays are the most energetic form of electromagnetic radiation, but they cannot be focused by lenses or mirrors. To create an image, scientists use a coded aperture, a patterned mask that casts gamma-ray shadows. These shadow patterns on a digital detector array are then used to construct the final image.
