The tiny spot circled in this image represents a significant astronomical discovery: the first detected flare from a failed star. These objects, called brown dwarfs, lack the mass to ignite nuclear hydrogen burning in their cores. LP944-20, a brown dwarf, is estimated to have only 6 percent the mass of the Sun.
