RX J1856.5-3754 is the closest known neutron star to Earth, located about 180 light-years away. Formed from the collapsed core of an exploding star, it is more massive than the Sun but only 20 kilometers across. This tiny, incredibly dense object travels through interstellar space at about 200 kilometers per second, its surface fantastically hot at around 700,000 degrees Celsius, making it detectable by X-ray telescopes.
