AR 9169: A Large Sunspot

NASA APOD · Ray Gralak
COSMIC MESSAGE

One of the largest sunspots in recent years, AR 9169, crossed our Sun in September 2000. This large, dark complex is a magnetic depression, visible in the photograph below and right of center. Though quiet at the time, regions around such sunspots are watched for explosive eruptions. AR 9169 held the largest sunspot of that solar maximum.
