COSMIC MESSAGE
The Lyman-alpha forest is not a forest of trees, but of hydrogen gas clouds. These clouds absorb light from distant quasars, leaving a distinct pattern in their spectra. Early in the universe, these clouds were much denser, forming a 'thicket' rather than a forest.
