COSMIC MESSAGE
The Apollo 16 crew deployed the first lunar astronomical observatory in 1972. This Far Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph used a 3-inch Schmidt telescope. It was used to photograph Earth, nebulae, star clusters, and the Large Magellanic Cloud. The equipment was placed in the shadow of the Lunar Module to prevent overheating.
