A Sun Pillar

NASA APOD · Stan Richard
COSMIC MESSAGE

When the air is cold and the Sun is low, falling ice crystals can reflect sunlight to create a sun pillar. These flat, stop-sign shaped crystals align nearly flat as they flutter down. Sunlight reflects off them, forming a column of light above or below the Sun, as seen in this photograph.
