Islands in the Photosphere
NASA APOD · Gunther Groenez
COSMIC MESSAGE
Sunspots are dark, planet-sized islands on the Sun's bright surface, the photosphere. They are regions of intense magnetic fields that cool the plasma. This sketch from March 6th shows the intricate patterns of a sunspot group. Astronomers still use drawings to monitor these features, just as observers did before cameras.
