On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. His Vostok 1 spacecraft carried him once around Earth, reaching an altitude of 200 miles. Gagarin was strictly a passenger on this flight. His onboard controls were locked out as a precaution against the unknown physiological effects of spaceflight.
