NASA's Space Infrared Telescope Facility, SIRTF, was the most powerful infrared telescope launched at the time. It was designed to study the universe in infrared light, which can penetrate cosmic dust clouds. NASA invited the public to help name this Great Observatory, following the tradition of naming them after influential scientists.
