Comet Borrelly's Nucleus

NASA APOD · Deep Space 1 Team
COSMIC MESSAGE

Deep Space 1 took the most detailed image ever of a comet nucleus. Comet Borrelly's nucleus is about eight kilometers long, with mountains, faults, and craters. NASA controllers drove the aging probe through the hostile environment of the distant comet to get this picture. The probe survived, even though comet fragments could have disabled it.
