Deep Space 1's ion drive produces about 1/50th of a pound of thrust at full throttle. This force is so small it would barely hold up a piece of paper on Earth. However, ion propulsion systems, powered by solar arrays, can run continuously. For long missions, they ultimately outperform the powerful but brief blasts of chemical rockets.
