The First Rocket Launch from Cape Canaveral
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Bumper 2 rocket, a two-stage vehicle combining a V-2 missile with a WAC Corporal rocket, was the first rocket launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. This event on July 24, 1950, marked a new era in spaceflight. The upper stage of the Bumper 2 reached then-record altitudes of almost 400 kilometers, higher than many modern spacecraft. It was primarily used for testing rocket components and studying the upper atmosphere.
