The Secret of the Black Aurora
NASA APOD · Jan Curtis
COSMIC MESSAGE
Black aurora, like the gaps seen in this image, are not just an absence of light. Recent research using the Cluster spacecraft has found they are actually 'anti-auroras.' In normal aurora, charged particles fall to Earth, causing glows. In black aurora, particles are accelerated *away* from Earth, creating dark voids in the light show.
