Thackeray's Globules

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This Hubble Space Telescope image shows Thackeray's Globules, dense clouds of gas and dust in the star-forming region IC 2944 in Centaurus. These dark clouds, first observed by A. D. Thackeray, are over a light-year wide and contain enough material to form multiple stars. IC 2944 is about 5,900 light-years away, and these globules are prime sites for new star formation.
