The Mysterious Cone Nebula

NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE

This cosmic pillar of cold gas and dust, called the Cone Nebula, stands 2,700 light-years away in Monoceros. Its conical shape is sculpted by the fierce winds and radiation from nearby hot, young stars. The bright star S Monocerotis, visible to the right, illuminates the blue reflection nebulae around it. This region is a stellar nursery, where new stars are still being born.
