COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Ikeya-Zhang, discovered independently by Kaoru Ikeya and Daqing Zhang, passed through Earth's skies in 2002. It was first seen as a faint object near the western horizon in Cetus. Comets are icy bodies that release gas and dust as they approach the Sun, forming a bright coma and often a tail. This comet brightened enough to be seen with the unaided eye in March and April of 2002.
