Comet Ikeya-Zhang, a giant snowball from the early solar system, grew bright enough to be seen in the night sky in 2002. This image, taken over Tenerife, shows the comet shortly after it rounded the Sun. It was reported to be nearly third magnitude, making it brighter than many visible stars. Observers watched it transition from the evening to the morning sky.
