Mysterious Black Water in Florida Bay

In early 2002, parts of Florida Bay mysteriously turned black, as seen in this image from the SeaWiFS instrument on the SeaStar satellite. Visibility dropped significantly in the usually clear waters. Scientists collected samples to investigate the cause of this unusual discoloration.
