An Unusual Globule in IC 1396

NASA APOD · Jean-Charles Cuillandre
COSMIC MESSAGE

In the star-forming region IC 1396, also known as the Elephant's Trunk Nebula, a dark cometary globule is being eroded. A bright, young star, too distant to pose any threat, emits energetic light that eats away at the dust. Jets and winds of particles from this star also push away the surrounding gas and dust, shaping the nebula.
