Two Hours Before Neptune

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Two hours before its closest approach in 1989, the Voyager 2 spacecraft captured this image of Neptune. For the first time, long, light-colored cirrus-type clouds were clearly visible high in the planet's atmosphere. Shadows of these clouds can even be seen on lower cloud decks. Neptune's blue color comes from methane, which absorbs red light, while its atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and helium.
