Europa's Freckles

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Europa, one of Jupiter's Galilean moons, has a surface marked by ridges, cracks, and dark reddish spots called lenticulae, or 'freckles.' These freckles, about 10 kilometers across, are believed to be blobs of warmer ice pushing up from below. Data from the Galileo spacecraft in 1996 and 1997 created this image, hinting at a liquid water ocean beneath Europa's icy crust.
