NGC 1700: Elliptical Galaxy and Rotating Disk

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 1700 is a young elliptical galaxy about 160 million light-years away. While elliptical galaxies are usually thought to be simple, with old stars and little gas, NGC 1700 shows something different. Data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory reveals a 90,000 light-year wide rotating disk of hot gas. This finding challenges our understanding of elliptical galaxies.
