Launch of the Sun Pillar

NASA APOD · Lauri A. Kangas
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sun pillars are caused by ice crystals reflecting sunlight in cold air. This pillar was photographed at sunrise over Lake Ontario, looking eastward from Caledon, Ontario. The sun is still low on the horizon, but its light is already creating a striking column.
