Abell 1689 Warps Space
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Abell 1689, a galaxy cluster two billion light-years away, is one of the universe's most massive objects. The Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys shows it warping space. Light from background galaxies is bent, creating multiple, curved images. This gravitational lensing effect reveals the cluster's immense mass, much of which is dark matter.
