The Hubble Space Telescope's NICMOS instrument captured this detailed false-color image of Saturn in January 1998. It shows the ringed planet in reflected infrared sunlight. Different colors indicate varying heights and compositions of cloud layers, which are thought to consist of ammonia ice crystals. The planet's rings cast a clear shadow on its upper hemisphere.
