COSMIC MESSAGE
Dramatic prominences, clouds of solar gas held above the Sun's surface by its magnetic field, can be seen at the Sun's edge. The prominence on the left is large enough to easily fit Earth beneath it. These quiescent prominences can last about a month and sometimes erupt, expelling hot gas into the solar system.
