IC 4603: Reflection Nebula in Ophiuchius

NASA APOD · Gary Stevens
COSMIC MESSAGE

This starfield in Ophiuchus looks like an impressionistic painting because of interstellar dust. These tiny, carbon-rich particles, similar in size to cigarette smoke, scatter starlight. The dust originates in the outer atmospheres of large, cool, young stars. As the star dies, the dust disperses and grows, sometimes forming dense clouds that block visible light from background stars.
